Before doing so I would recommend getting a WIndows 7 Upgrade Advisor service completed on your unit. It can identify many possible problems before they occur. This service can be done by a certified ConnectPro Online Support Expert, in the comfort of your own home. You can find information regarding this service here.
You may also want to back up all your important data prior to the upgrade. This can be done by clicking on my graphic below and connecting to a ConnectPro Online Support Expert or if you should choose, you can have one of the in-store tech experts to complete the work for you.
It's always best if a clean install is completed when upgrading to a new version of windows, if not, you could be carrying over problems that may or may not be present in your current configuration.
More info about ConnectPro Online Support as it applies to your situation can be found here.
Hope that information helps you out some.

If you're running the version of Windows Vista that coincides with your copy of Windows 7 (Home Premium or Ultimate, for example) then there's another option available to you, called the in-place upgrade. This upgrade will preserve your programs and personal files, and replace just the operating system. Simply insert your Windows 7 disk at any time while running Vista, and you'll be given the option to install Windows 7, and perform the upgrade. The setup will first check your system for any incompatibilities or issues you might have in Windows 7, and if there's nothing system crippling, setup will proceed.
If you received your W7 upgrade from HP, you should have also received a HP Upgrade Assistant Disk. If this is the case, run this disk both before and after you run the Windows 7 Upgrade disk, so it can prepare your computer for the upgrade, as well as install HP drivers and software once the upgrade is complete. Also note that if you received your copy of Windows 7 from your manufacturer, Future Shop's in-store computer technicians can perform the upgrade for you, for free. Simply bring in the computer, your disks, and your receipt, and they'll take care of things.

Hi clicker,
Unfortunately the Vista recovery discs for HP's are used for reinstalling the entire system, you can't just re-install programs so no they cannot be used that way.
I agree with Tanarus, if you're worried about loosing things I would take it into your local Future Shop and talk to the technicians there. They can take a look at your system, reccomend and upgrade install or clean install for you, and give you suggestions for maintaining your files and programs, or just do it for you!
**Note: charges may apply for in-store techs to perform any work other than a basic upgrade if you received your Windows 7 discs from the manufacturer
