MicMacs directed by Jean-Pierre Juenet. 

The interesting thing about this blockbuster summer movie season, is that is has no blockbusters. Or good movies. So i thought I would take a little break from the big horrible movies I've been watching and see Jean-Pierre Juenet's (Delicatessen, Amelie) latest film, MicMacs. 

It's the story of a man, the bullet in his head, and his quest to revenge himself on those he deems responsible for putting it there. 

Dany Boon plays Basil, a passive video clerk happy to live his life in obscurity, until until one day he gets shot in the head. It happens. Rather than blame the people who shot him, he decides to blame the people that made the bullet, which is a little like blaming your neighbour's SUV for the Louisiana oil spill. Still, I can't really blame him. He falls in with a group of talented misfits, and they decide to take their revenge. 

Although this movie doesn't really come close to matching the delightful sense of whimsy prevalent in some of his previous work, MicMacs is definitely entertaining. It's fun, has a timely and potent message, and as usual with Jeunet's films, looks absolutely spectacular. While it's incredibly goofy in places, sometimes distractingly so,  that absurdity is part of it's charm.  

If you only watch one absurdist French art-film about the evils of the military-Industrial complex this year, make it this one.
